User group says aging OSes a threat While
the Microsoft Sydney .Net Users Group blames a "few big, noisy
corporates" for Microsoft's decision to maintain support for the
Windows 98 operating system, the OS has to go, it says.
With 58 million copies of Windows 98 currently installed
worldwide Microsoft was forced to do an about-face on plans to
withdraw support on January 16, 2004 and has extended support
for Win 98 and Win 98 (Second Edition) to June 30, 2006.
Local user group president and chief architect of local .Net
solutions developer SSW, Adam Cogan, said the operating system
has "got to go" as it poses a security threat. |

Adam does the rounds at Tech Ed 2003 Just after
presenting at Tech Ed in Australia, Adam's going to be venturing off
to present at Tech Ed 2003 in New Zealand and finally in Kuala
Lumpur. He's clocking up some serious frequent flyer points and
teaching developers across the globe some cool new tricks in the
process. When asked about his tour of New Zealand Adam said "Sure
our beloved Wallabies got trounced by the Kiwis but I'm not going to
let that affect my presentation to the Kiwis. I've presented in New
Zealand before and they're a cool bunch of people!" He's been asked
to present a SQL Server and WinForms session at the three events
he's attending. |

Westbus goes with .NET Westbus is Sydney's
largest private bus company that serves the communities of
Western Sydney and the Hills District by providing local, city,
school and charter bus services. SSW developed Westbus'
Charter Booking system to serve multiple concurrent users based
at the various Westbus depots which service the Western Sydney
region. The objective was to replace an existing DOS system, to
automate quote calculation and to integrate with Microsoft Great
Plains Accounting for invoicing. The application was
developed as an ASP.NET intranet application using a 4 tier
design. The .NET Framework 1.1 was used in conjunction with SQL
Server. The system generates reports powered by Crystal Reports
whilst being exportable to Adobe Acrobat PDF. Daniela

and efficient design has ensured the application has been

June 2003 | Crikey! Australia represented at
Tech Ed 2003 Our very own Adam Cogan was
proudly waving the Australian flag in the land of the stars and
stripes. As a speaker at the Microsoft developer conference Tech
Ed 2003 held in Dallas, Texas. Adam was the only Australian
contingent to present at the event. Adam said "Tech Ed rocked!
Doing the two sessions was a huge honor and I met some of the
coolest people on earth there!". Adam went solo and presented a
session for SQL Server DBAs aimed at showing you how to automate
some of the "Common DBA Tasks for SQL Server 2000". Being a true
SSW trooper he then teamed up with .NET Guru and author of the
first .NET book ever published, Billy Hollis, to provide an
informative presentation on "Building Advanced Data-Centric
Smart Clients". |

to tour Australia presenting at MSDN Updates. SSW
presents at the Btell XML Web Services Conference
David Klein and Peter Huang were proudly waving the SSW flag at
BTell's latest conference on XML Web Services. Together they
presented a real world case of how XML Web services are being
used in association with XML, 3G and WiFi in the realm of health

SSW gains funding from Austrade for export marketing efforts
The US has long been SSW's target market with regards to
software sales and in recognition of our marketing efforts, the
Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) has recognised our
efforts to push for home grown exports in foreign countries by
granting SSW support and advice when penetrating export markets.
Kyall SSW's Marketing and Events Coordinator says "It's great to
know that we have Austrade's backing and support. We're able to
leverage Austrade's international connections and affiliations
to gain some valuable market knowledge which we were previously
unaware of." |

SSW Wins Best Use of XML SSW entered a "Spent
a Day with .NET" competition. This meant staying up very late
and seeing what kind of code we could churn out in 24 hours.
Despite the bleary eyes, SSW won "Best Use of XML" category with
SSW Diagnostics.
